We spend a lot of time at our desks at work – which can often contribute to an unhealthy work-life balance. It is therefore not surprising that an estimated 1.2 million people suffer from an illness they believe was caused or made worse by work; and 80% of the new work-related conditions in the last year were musculoskeletal disorders or stress, depression or anxiety.
What’s more, the CBI has estimated the direct cost of employee absence to the economy at £14bn per year.
The need to prioritise ‘workplace wellness’ is therefore critical – but with organisations facing increasingly tight budgets and limited resource, it is not uncommon for employee health to fall under the radar, often limited to occupational health related interventions for injuries or illnesses acquired while at work.
However, as wellness, mindfulness and healthy living have returned to the forefront of public consciousness, there is an increasing number of schemes and programmes advocating an expansion of proactive (rather than reactive) health and safety initiatives and policies to encompass a more holistic approach to wellness.
As part of their commitment to positive workplace wellness, commercial workplace specialists, Area will host a dedicated session to explore mental, physical and financial wellbeing in the workplace.
